Perth to Fremantle by train

The Fremantle Line connects Perth with Fremantle via stations including Claremont, Cottesloe and North Fremantle. Use the timetable effective from 1 November 2026 and select a service whose destination is Fremantle. Some westbound services terminate at Claremont, so the direction of travel alone is not enough when choosing a train.

For a city visit, plan your arrival and return around the sights you actually want to see. The railway station gives access to the compact centre, with walking routes towards the West End, museums and market. Our Fremantle visitor guide helps connect those places into a visit. If you prefer transport and guiding together, compare the organised day trips from Perth and their different endpoints.

Keep your travel date in the journey planner. The November service changes include Perth departures at 16:51 and 17:15 ending at Claremont. Build the return journey from the current timetable as well, especially when your day includes a fixed cruise departure or attraction booking.

Entrance to a terminal building at Perth Airport

Perth Airport terminals and rail connections

At T1 and T2, the Skybridge links the terminal area with Airport Central station. For T3 and T4, use bus 292 to Redcliffe station; the station does not have a direct pedestrian connection from those terminals. The airport lists the terminal bus at approximately 12-minute intervals in peak periods, and the terminal shuttle is free.

Continue by airport train and change for the Fremantle Line using a current journey plan. The airport's rail figures of 18 minutes from Airport Central to Perth and 15 minutes from Redcliffe to Perth describe those individual sections. Allow separately for reaching the station, waiting, changing trains and completing the journey to Fremantle. Enter your arrival terminal and final destination together when planning, rather than treating a train's time to Perth as the whole airport journey.

For accommodation beyond the centre, include the final local leg. North Fremantle and Fremantle are separate stations; choose the one that fits your address. The accommodation-area guide compares central Fremantle, South Fremantle and North Fremantle by their position relative to the station, waterfront and sights.

Taxi and transfers from Perth Airport (PER)

A road transfer from Perth Airport (PER) to Fremantle is an alternative when you prefer to arrange the airport-to-address journey together. Enter the airport terminal and your actual Fremantle destination when selecting a transfer. Compare the vehicle and luggage arrangements for your party, then use the quoted journey price and collection instructions for that booking.

The airport has designated taxi and rideshare pickup areas at all terminals, with taxi ranks operating around the clock. Its airport pickup fee is 4.70 AUD in addition to the journey fare. Budget for the full fare rather than reading that airport charge as the cost of reaching Fremantle. Match the pickup instructions to your terminal and leave room for traffic in your onward plans.

Local public transport and fares

The Go-Anywhere tariff introduced on 1 January 2026 provides three hours of validity with transfers. The standard fare is 3.50 AUD when paid in cash or by contactless payment. SmartRider's 10 percent discount gives a 3.15 AUD fare, or 2.80 AUD with the 20 percent Autoload discount. Use the conditions attached to your payment method, especially when comparing concessions and day tickets.

Sunday free travel applies with SmartRider or contactless payment, with normal tagging on and off. Cash tickets follow their own fare conditions. Within Fremantle, the city lists bus 532 through the CBD in both directions, every 15 minutes during the day, seven days a week. Plan local travel with current services rather than older CAT directions.

Walyalup Bridge opened on 1 November 2026. Finishing works and access changes continue, including the restoration of Canning Highway approaches and Beach Street beneath the bridge. The temporary South Terrace free-travel zone and special bicycle rule ended on the opening date. Bus 996 connects Fremantle station across the bridge with Claremont and Stirling.

Car hire and parking

Car hire is available at Perth Airport. Carry a licence valid for the rental period and review the rental company's contract and payment requirements. Australia drives on the left. For a day concentrated on Fremantle's centre, weigh the convenience of having the car against parking and the walking you will do once it is parked.

The city's 2026/27 parking information lists designated areas at Round House, Esplanade Reserve and Fremantle Oval at 15 AUD per day at the machine, or 14 AUD through EasyPark. Those figures apply to the named areas, with local signs and time limits controlling the actual space. Check any app service charges separately. Enter your registration when paying; parking is recorded electronically and PayStay is no longer used.

Arrive by Swan River cruise

A tourist cruise from Perth is another way to reach Fremantle. The one-way option includes the captain's commentary and bar facilities, with return travel included only if that option is selected. It is a separate sightseeing ticket from the city waterfront. Plan the airport journey independently, then use the river trip as part of your time between Perth and Fremantle. Our cruise guide compares the directions and departure arrangements.
